History: originated in the city of Brussels, Belgium. This little toy breed descended from a rough coated terrier type kept in the stables for rodent control. Also referred to as the Griffon Bruxellois, Griffon Belge and Petit Brabacon. All three are identical except for coat. 19th century breeding of these terriers was introduced to Pugs and King Charles spaniels. From these, originated the smooth coat, black colour, and harsh coat as well as the domed head and well turned up under jaw. They were first registered in 1883 with the Belgium KC. The great wars were disastrous for the breed and numbers are still reduced making this little toy dog still rather rare. Recognized by AKC in 1910
General Appearance: small, cobby, toy breed. Sturdy, thick body, with bold trotting carriage. Head domed, nose black and well laid back, eyes large black and prominent. Very upturned under jaw, with undershot jaw. Well muscled straight legs. Ears may be cropped or natural. Tail also may be docked to 1/3 and carried upright. Smaller specimens not over 7 lbs. Larger specimens, if over 7 lbs, may not be over 11 lbs for males and 12 lbs for females.
Coat and Care: In rough coated variety, hair covers the body and head and should be hard wiry and dense. Not shaggy but long enough to be distinctly different from the smooth variety of coat and is double coated. Smooth coat is like that of a Boston, sleek and glossy, and shows no wiry hairs and is not double coated. The rough coated variety will need complete regular hand stripping in order for dead coat to be properly removed and allow for new coat to grow. Regular brushing will keep the rough coat tidy. Colours: 1.) red 2.) Belge(black mask and red/brown colouring 3.) black and tan 4.) solid black
Feeding: quality kibble or raw fed once or twice daily.
Training and Obedience: Gentle training with patience is necessary. Will not respond well to harsh training methods. May do well in obedience and rat trials.
Activity: Just playing in a fenced yard is adequate. Not a long distance walker.
Temperament: a fine little house pet with a lively and upbeat personality. Active and fun. Devoted family dog. Good with children.
