English Toy Spaniel

History and origin: A very old breed also called King Charles Spaniel. Loved by Kings and aristocracy in England.  Thought to have originated in Japan and Spain.  The royal Stuarts including King Charles 1 gave the name to the breed. May trace as far back as the Crusades and likely related to the Pug, Pekinese, and Japanese Chin as well as Cavalier King Charles spaniel. Spaniel types were a fondness of English Sovereignty and the larger types while good for hunting were too large to be a companionable lap dog. Size was bred down and hunting ability disappeared. The smaller spaniel became prized as a useful foot warmer and was best suited as a ladies’ dog. It enjoyed the comfort of the couch and bed and was even used as a medical aid to provide heat for bodily wounds and other ailments. Recognized by AKC in 1886

General Appearance : The English Toy Spaniel is a compact, cobby and essentially square toy dog possessed of a short-nosed, domed head, a merry and affectionate demeanor and a silky, flowing coat. His compact, sturdy body and charming temperament, together with his rounded head, lustrous dark eye, and well cushioned face, proclaim him a dog of distinction and character. The important characteristics of the breed are exemplified by the head. Long ears have heavy feathering. Tail may be docked. Trotting gait is free. Size: 8-14 pounds

Colours : Black and Tan: ( King Charles) Black body coat with tan marking on face and cheeks,  above eyes and on legs. Tri Colour: (Prince Charles)  White with black patches and tan markings on face, over eyes etc   Blenheim: White with rich red splashes.  Ruby: an all over solid red chestnut colour. Regular brushing will maintain the coat and the long coated ears can be protected  when eating with an ear wrap ( snood)

Feeding: quality kibble or raw, fed twice daily.

Training and Obedience: will respond well to simple training but harsh methods are to be avoided. Use gentle but firm commands in daily training.

Activity: Easy exercise in a fenced yard, not a long distance runner and care must be taken on hot summer days, due to short nose. Love to play. Fun little breed.

Temperament : sweet and endearing, calm and quiet, perfect lap dog. Loves family and children.  Happy, exuberant, and affectionate.
