History and Origin: Originated in France and probably dates back to the 6th century. Most likely descended from the famed St Hubert hounds. St Hubert was the patron saint of hounds and developed the Basset as a shorter legged, slower moving variety of hound that could trail small game with the huntsman on foot. Used extensively in packs to flush small game such as hares for the hunter. Basset pack hunting continues today in England and France.
General Appearance: A scent (trailing hound) with the characteristic long pendulous ears, strong peaked narrow skull , and strong muzzle, very heavy, low slung body, with short strong legs, massive feet, well rounded rib cage, long level back ending in long tail carried upward in hound fashion. Skin is supple and in excess around head and throat. Should not exceed 14 inches in height. The Basset hound trots with a strong gait and while heavy and low, should never be clumsy.
Coat Care and Colour: Any hound colour is permissible. Because of the very heavy skin folds around face, long drooping ears and the potential for drooling, the Basset Hound will require extra cleansing care with a baby wipe daily in these areas. Brush regularly and bathe when necessary.
Feeding: A quality kibble fed twice daily. Good eager eaters.
Training and Obedience: Can master basic obedience but will move slower and more deliberately than the faster longer legged breeds. May exhibit some stubbornness as is common with many hounds, so be patient. This breed will do well in tracking trials, hunt tests, scent detection, and barn hunt.
Activity: needs exercise in the form of a daily walk but never allowed off leash as they have a natural hunting, trailing instinct and will follow a scent readily. A run in a fenced yard is a good form of exercise and enjoyment for a Basset Hound
Temperament: A completely sweet and amiable breed, good with other dogs and children. Excels in a home environment. Will use voice when happy and can ‘bay’ loudly. Generally laid back, loyal, affectionate, and trust worthy family pet.
