Rhodesian Ridgeback

History & Origin: Developed from the ridged dogs of the native Hottentot tribe in Africa.  European settlers in South Africa (formally Rhodesia) crossed these ridged dogs with other breeds such as Mastiffs, Pointers, and various sight hounds and terriers. It was thought that the dogs bearing the ridge made better hunting dogs. The breed was originally bred to follow and guard wagons and settlements. In addition they were superb trackers and hunters of large game as well as protector of farm and families. A group of Rhodesian Ridgebacks would keep a lion at bay so that the huntsman could get in for the kill. The Ridgebacks did not attack the lion. The first ‘lion dogs’ were registered in 1924 by the South African Kennel Club. Recognized by the AKC in 1955.
